Moving Jungle Animals

Your KS1 children will explore how to construct a sliding mechanism, a lever and pivot mechanism, and finally a wheel mechanism, before applying their knowledge and understanding to design and make a moving jungle animal picture for an author who is writing a book about jungle animals!

This jungle-themed Sliders and Levers KS1 planning pack includes detailed lesson plans, engaging and informative PDF slide shows for the teaching input, and differentiated worksheets and activity ideas to suit a range of abilities within your class.

A Knowledge Organiser is available to support the learning in this scheme. It is included in the Complete Series download or can be purchased individually.

Lesson 1: Sliding Mechanism

In this first Mechanisms KS1 lesson, children will find out what a sliding mechanism is, and how it can be used to make a simple moving picture.

They will then explore the sliding mechanism themselves in their independent activities, making a variety of simple moving pictures with different jungle animals using the resources provided.

This first Mechanisms KS1 lesson includes an easy-to-follow plan, a set of informative PDF slides for the teaching input, as well as differentiated activity ideas and a range of engaging, printable resources.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides
  • Activity ideas
  • Background Scenes
  • Jungle Animal Pictures
  • Challenge Pack

Lesson 2: Levers and Pivots

To begin this Levers KS1 lesson, children are shown a moving picture that uses a lever and pivot mechanism, and are challenged to explain how they think it works.

As a class, children will then explore and discuss how it has been made, looking at how to hide the lever at the back of a picture too. Children then use the resources provided to create their own moving pictures of jungle animals using the lever and pivot mechanism.

A detailed plan, a set of engaging slides, differentiated activity ideas and a range of printable resources are all included in this Levers KS1 Lesson Pack.

What's included:

  • Lesson plan
  • Slides

Children are encouraged to think carefully about their design, including choosing the animal and background, the type of mechanism they will use, and the equipment they will need.

A detailed plan, a set of engaging slides, differentiated activity ideas and a range of printable resources are all included in this Sliders and Levers KS1 Lesson Pack.
